Marajó Island, an island on the northern coast of Brazil, in Pará state. It covers about 15,000 square miles (39,000 km2) in the Amazon River delta. There are swamps, tropical forests, and vast plains. Ranching is extensive, although much of the land is flooded in spring. Indians of ancient times left fine pottery and huge burial mounds on the island.
